SHELTER Community Center

Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 marked a significant event for the city, feeling more like a homecoming after the pandemic rather than just another art week. The event attracted global guests and served as a platform for various cultural activities, with Shelter Athletics stepping in to blend wellbeing, education, and art for a charitable cause.

The SHELTER Community Center was established as a pop-up space during Art Basel, featuring a vibrant collaboration with local lifestyle brand Kapok and Chicago-based artist Cody Hudson. This space showcased Hudson's colorful artwork and design, which was integrated with up-cycled materials by Hong Kong design firm, Editecture, to reflect both the local culture and athletic themes. The creative direction for the center was a joint effort by SHELTER Athletics founder Jason Lam and club mom Denise Lai, enhancing the community-focused atmosphere of the event.

Central to the SHELTER Community Center was the 'Give Shop,' which offered unique products from contributors like Sunnies, Casetify, BeCandle, Flagrant Hot Sauce, as well as SHELTER exclusive merch, with a portion of sales going to the Edit Academy charity. The opening night attracted a diverse crowd from the local community and beyond, featuring music by Jerry Haha with Warner Music and food/drink from Dough Bros, Fun Kee Scoops, and Fernet Hunter. Throughout the weekend, the center hosted a range of workshops and running sessions, reinforcing the idea that making connections through fitness and charitable efforts can help bring people together and support resilience in the community.
